Seattle Bon Vivant goes to Paris...

I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date,
I have no time to say good-bye, hello,
I'm late, I'm late, I'm late.

Been super busy with last minute errands. Tomorrow I'm off to Paris...to eat, drink and be merry...and who knows, if all goes well, to meet my pastry hero, Pierre Hermé at his 72, rue Bonaparte boutique. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. As per our fax exchange, must call Anne at his office as soon as we arrive in Paris...

One suitcase, many lists...

Its always the same thing: List after list after list to help me remember...mostly a master list with a couple add-ons. And a little tip: When going to a city like Paris (or Madrid or London for that matter), not taking any toiletries is the only way to go. So, check-in and go shopping right away!  Parapharmacies are not only a lot of fun to shop at but they are everywhere, all with wonderful brands that are much more moola in our parts. Having some nice treats for noshing available in your hotel room adds up to the experience, especially helpful for those late night or early morning "blame it on jetlag" hunger pangs. You'll thank me for it! :-D

The Camera

Finally! After much debate, browsing and questions Canon PowerShot A70 is the final choice. Great little camera! User friendly (thanks Alfie!), lots of picture taking modes, great price. Now its all about sitting with the manual and learn about the features, play around with it and start taking pictures ASAP. I guess the proof will be in the gravy. But I have great hopes for fun pictures and maybe one or two great ones. :-)

As the day comes to a close...

a few last minute thoughts...Black Tights/Bolshoi Ballet 67 was worth watching for three reasons:Maurice Chevalier, Moira Shearer and the Carmen ballet. Made the mistake of watching Irreversible last night. What a terribly violent and gruesome film. How sad! More than once I had to cover ears and eyes, thinking of turning it off. Had to turn The Pillow Book off today. Finally I just could not get into it. I will give it another go post trip and see if I can finish it. But today between all the things I had to do it seemed this movie was going nowhere and at times I did not know if I was supposed to laugh or cry.

PS:The ribs were EXCELLENT. In the oven at noon, out of the oven at 6pm. Delish!

Saturday Mishmash

Too many things to do, too little time! I must buy a digital camera tomorrow. Need to finish a billable hours report and get all my tax schtuff in order for Monday. Not to mention finish watching Black Tights/Bolshoi Ballet 67. Such great perfomances albeit an horrendeous transfer. Criterion needs to get a hold of this print and fix it all up.

My friend Alfie shared with me a fabulous Spare Rib recipe that I hope to cook tomorrow. That way I can put everything in the slow cooker early in the am, set up the timer, let it rip and have it for dinner with a little pasta (it is Sopranos Sunday after all) as a reward for the hard work that awaits me tomorrow. Frankly, I can't wait!

Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

Would you be my, could you be my... neighbor? :-) At this point I am basically talking to myself but..I am liking the way the blog looks..minimalist yet personal and may I say even a bit cute? ;-)...I'll add some more content as soon as I can figure out how to list favorite films and vendors.

De gustibus non est disputandum

"If we do not find something different, at least we shall find something new". Voltaire

A dress rehearsal of sorts, an exercise in futility perhaps...a very personal online journal of favorite things that until now have been relegated to multiple emails between family and friends, travel journals, notebooks and pocket Moleskines accumulated over years and years of scribbles and notations and photos. Perhaps one day I'll transfer all that here but right now I am not sure what will happen.

I am still thinking whether to publish it or not or to leave it, as it has been until now, password protected and in time share it with just a few close friends and neighbors...

For now it is mostly a place to chronicle likes-- and perhaps a few dislikes even--, my adventures in cooking and baking and shopping, food and wine around Seattle, favorite places in the city, films I've seen, books read, music I'm listening to, holidays, weekend and day trips taken, trivia, recipes, Paris and Seattle schtuff.

The minutiae that only a few of my friends would bear to read about...But hey, I guess we'll find out eventually.

My hope is that someone, somewhere can find--in my little corner of the blogosphere-- something new or interesting, a new restaurant to visit, a delicious dish, a great little recipe, a fun new ingredient or tool, some great music to listen to, a film to watch, a wonderful book to read, a fabulous vendor or shopping recommendation, a new friend.

So, on with the show...
