Spega La Natura Low Fat Yogurt
Trader Joe's on the day of its opening at their new location in Capitol Hill. It was, as it always is at TJ's--one of my favorite food vendors in the Seattle area or anywhere in the world--a fun and exciting time. I shopped for many of my staples and made the aqcuaintance with some new ones.
RisaG wanted to me to post what I thought was "the best purchase of all". Well, that is a hard thing to do Risa. You see, I love so many things that Trader Joe's carries. So, in reponse to your request, I think, over the next few months, I'll try to cover as many of these wonderful products as possible. This way you all get a look to know them, look them up, sample and perhaps post your impressions about them too. Who knows? They might also become your favorites.
I'll start with the only flavored yogurt I'll buy from any merchant. Spega La Natura Low Fat Yogurt is by far one of the best yogurt brands I've found in this category. Imported from Italy, Spega yogurt is made of cow's milk and is available at TJ's in a few flavors and combinations. I've tried their Coffee, Cinnamon & Ginger (the one in the picture) and their Mixed Berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries).
They come in duos. Two 150g (5.3 ounces each) and retail for $2.59. All natural. Made with Bifidobacterium, Lacidophilus and 0.5% milk fat. The fruit (sweetened) is in the bottom. You stir it and presto. They have a lovely texture and flavor and come in these cute little glass jars that are not only recyclable but also the perfect vehicles for off the cuff home jam making efforts. Just top them with plastic wrap and a rubber band in a rush. You can re-use them in the kitchen and garden and they hold a small tea light nicely too.

Yes, this is a wonderful yogurt. I see folks in California say that it will be discontinued at TJ's. Well we just purchased some at TJ's in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA on Saturday May 3, 2008.
I sure hope they decide to keep it on the shelves.
I'll have to check my local Ralphs now.

I just bought some Spega berry yogurt on Monday at TJ's in Goleta (Santa Barbara), CA. It is yummy! Maybe I should go back and buy the rest. I'll ask them if they're still going to carry it.

calling all the fans of spega now, where are you? i drive to a special trader joe's in no. ca., in alameda, because none of the other trader joe's in the area carry this product. (a lot of lame duck's say, we're gonna get it and never do). i was told today that the entire company, yep, 300 stores, have stopped carrying this wonderful product. my 2-year-old uses the jars for drinks as they are sturdy glasses that don't necessarily break when dropped. also, they are so healthy and wonderful. what is trader joe's problem anyway? could we all complain and/or post comments here like signatures and take it in to tj's to say please get it back... viva italia... such good quality. thanks!
p.s. i like that i'm not adding to plastic refuse but have sweet little jars i can keep and use.

I need to find Spega in the Santa Fe/Albuquerque area. Need your help.
Hi,
I'm not familiar with New Mexico markets so... my suggestion will be trying a Trader Joe's in your area if available. Other than that I suggest writing the company.
Good luck, V

They sell Spega at Whole Foods too, although it's more expensive. I've also bought Spega at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods in Los Angeles.

I recently found 8 cute jars at a thrift shop and wondered what they were! Now I know. Thanks for all the info. I need to get to TJ's and try this out. It sounds wonderful. I had thought these would be great little place setting vases at a dinner or luncheon. L

Please tell me where I might find Spega yogurt in Atlanta. My first taste of your yogurt was while I was visiting a friend in California. It's a great product. Nancy

I have purchased the SPEGA yogurt in the past and just love it. But lately my Trader Joe's in Darien, CT doesn't have it. Is there any other way I can purchase it. Please let me know, its the BEST!!!

Try the apricot flavored one! I saw it at TJ today and bought the last two and all I can say is "YUM!"
On a side note, those glass jars are perfect for flower pots. Michaels has the really small terra cotta pots and they fir perfectly in the jar. I cut a short length of cotton string and thread it through the hole in the bottom, fill it w/ potting soil, and stick a clipping from and African violet in it or any other small plant. Then fill the jar about 1/4 full of water and stick the pot in. The string wicks the water up and you end up w/ a cute plant to line your windowsill with. You can tie a ribbon around the neck to make a cute gift. You can also make really cute jar candles. :)
Thanks L! I'll have to go to Trader Joe's tomorrow and see if I can locate these apricot ones. And thank you so much for the tips on re-using the jars.

Yeah, right. So you got me hooked on this righteous yogurt and now you have taken it off the shelves. That's pretty poor PR.
Pete Nelson
Whoah Pete! Spega is still available at Trader Joe's. The yogurt that was taken off the shelves was Fage Total Greek Yogurt. Btw, I do not work for Trader Joe's nor Spega. Like you, I am only a fan. If it was up to me... :-)
