I admit this label appealed to the Francophile in me. It also called out to my love of everything that has to do with overweight pooches, bread, the color red, neckerchiefs and images redolent of L'oignon rose de Roscoff and the Onion Johnnies. Who cared if the wine would be any good?
It also reminded me of one of my favorite films of all times, Sylvain Chomet's Les Triplettes de Belleville . How could I not pick up at least one bottle when it had this impossibly cute label?
Red Bicyclette is the latest new label from California's E. & J. Gallo. It is made in the south of France and they are counting on it becoming the next big thing in the USA.
In the Seattle area, Red Bicyclette is available at Larry's Markets and possibly many others but it was at Larry's where I found my bottle. There are three different options: Chardonnay, Syrah, and Merlot. All priced to sell ($10).
I took home the Syrah and will post on my tasting as soon as I dare open this cutie. With such a catchy name and appealing label --clever marketing indeed-- I'm just happy looking at the beret wearing, baguette toting, dog towing, bicycle-pedaling Frenchman. ;-)
