One of my favorite shops in the Seattle area happens to be in my old Bellevue neighborhood. Mais Oui! has been a haven for all things French and beautiful. Pottery, linen, food and wine, candles and fragrance, teas and books, glass and stemware, music and garden accessories. It has also been a place I enjoyed stopping by just because, to chat Paris and catch up on our respective trips with the owner, Molly, the consummate Francophile and style guru extraordinaire.
Just two days ago I received a little note in the mail from Molly giving me a heads up on the 4th Anniversary Open House Celebration and a bit of sad news too: she is closing the shop next month. So I headed out to Bellevue yesterday morning to visit with Molly and of course, to do some shopping and support the sale.
Molly explained: "With the rise of transportation prices and decline of the dollar it has become increasingly difficult to offer authentic French imports at affordable prices. It is for that reason that she will be closing the retail store in Bellevue but will concentrate on her new catalog, website business and will also participate in local events during the year" (Redmond Market was mentioned).
With about an hour to kill before heading out to work I made sure to check every nook and cranny of the rather large store for favorites and perhaps a surprise or two. I walked away with a few books (Christian Constant's among them), schnazzy glasses, too many 50% off candles--*Gilles Dewavrin in Lait de Figue (Fig Milk), my favorite!, in their metal boîtes --and even manage to get really lucky and find a few of the lovely La Maison de L'Etain pewter and glass jam pots (of course!) that I have purchased before--sadly this company is no longer in business. I deplete her final stock. ;-)
There is so much stuff to shop for at such amazing prices. Some of the merchandise is discounted up to 75% off the retail and a big portion of the stock is exclusive to Mais Oui! or at least I've only seen it there (the darling Moulin Roty included).
On Bastille Day (July 14th) Mais Oui! will be paying the sales tax on all purchases and during the month of July all display pieces will be for sale. This will include display cabinets, tables, plate stands, books stands, etc.
So if you are a Francophile, love to cook, set a gorgeous table and you live in the Seattle area you really must head out to Bellevue (via I-90 or 520, Bellevue Way exit) to see Molly at Mais Oui! and shop for all things France.
There are plenty of gorgeous Christophe Pichon and Veronique Pichon, Antheor, Niderviller and Terre è Provence dinnerware. There's also loads of fab stem and glassware, wine and wine accessories, linens, Vallee Noir pottery, artisan pottery pieces, food, candy, teas (all Les Palais des Thés are reduced to over 75% off), candles, room sprays and books. Ahh, and there is a 10% of on all wines, ciders and Champagnes.
This is a final sale and things are flying out the door so don't say I did not warn you. Go shop now!
