In dire need of a little pick me up this morning, I headed down to Madison Park to the newest outpost of Mercer Island based *Oh Chocolate! (with locations in Mercer Island and Bellevue, the Krautheim family specializes in handmade truffles. The chocolates are made fresh everyday) to try their French Hot Chocolate.
Margo, the owner, made it for me.
She presented the thick, unctuous, dark and fragrant elixir in a lovely white porcelain demitasse, with a side of freshly whipped --no sugar added--cream.
Like drinking just made ganache. Creamy and silky. Without a hint of spice though, which is nice for a change, since I happen to love my French style hot chocolate with a dash of cayenne or ancho chile powder.
Upon first sip, I closed my eyes and was instantly transported to Angelina's (the inspiration behind her wonderful concoction) or even better, Café de Flore--whose chocolate chaud version I love even more.
It was very easy to get cozy with my cocoa, enjoying it by the spoonful to make it last. My strategy: a tiny spoon, a bit of whipped cream and a quick dip in the hot chocolate.
Not a drop was left.
