Seattle Metropolitan finally launched today.
I could not wait to get my paws on the Premiere Issue (from the same publishers of Portland Monthly) so I drove around for a while this morning looking for it--to no avail--until I called the magazine and asked where oh where were the precious.
"Whole Foods (Ravenna and Bellevue) and QFC later this afternoon". So I drove to Whole Foods in Ravenna and found a fresh batch right as I came into the store.
I've been browsing and reading my copy since noon and so far I like what I see.
I especially enjoyed the story on artisanal cheesemaker Rhonda Gothberg who is making goat cheese in Skagit Valley, an article on pairing wine and rabbit stew, a feature on Veil in Queen Anne and for the ballet patron in me (have you subscribed yet?), a fabulous article on Pacific Northwest Ballet and the amazing Peter Boal (pity the soul who has missed the season so far).
Then there is, of course, the cover story: 65 Best Ways To Love Our City which should have actually been titled 100 Things to Love About Seattle (at least!).
Memo to Seattle Metropolitan: You guys just got here. It is not your city just yet. You'll have to wow us on a monthly basis to earn the privilege.
Just one thing: Top Pot Doughnuts downtown location (in my very own corner of the city) is at 2124 5th Avenue, not 4th Avenue. :-)

Earlier today, after shopping the West Seattle Farmers Market we arrived two minutes too late (3:02pm) to grab lunch at Eats so we drove up the street originally intending to have lunch at the Salvadorean Bakery.
But then we noticed Tacos Guaymas was open and remembering how much fellow blogger, brilliant legal mind and reader of this blog Balasubramani loves this joint, we changed plans, found street parking and quickly went in.
After a long, fun day of browsing and shopping in West Seattle and with only a cup of coffee for breakfast my friend Kris and I were really hungry. So we ordered the Wet carne asada burrito for me (such a generous sized burrito I just had to cut it in half and take the rest home).
Side of delicious red sauce, homemade guacamole, pico de gallo, salsa verde, chipotle sauce and onion, jalapeño and carrot pickle. Everything was divine, everything made on the premises, fresh as can be.
And who knew, open on Sundays! Cash and Visa only.

Two days ago, while shopping for dinner at Sand Point's Metropolitan Market, I spotted a display of carefully stacked red takeout boxes labeled Emily's Chocolate Covered Fortune Cookies. The box was so lovely and the thought of chocolate covered fortune cookies so promising and delicious sounding that I could not help myself. A little red box quickly made it to my basket.
"Emily’s Chocolate Covered Fortune Cookies come in a vibrant red Chinese take-out box that conveys its own message of adoration – with the kanji character for “love” printed on the outside. Each box contains six individually wrapped cookies that carry unique love fortunes inside, such as, “Your efforts to win someone’s heart have not gone unnoticed,” and, “Your heart’s desire will be fulfilled.”
The box made it home in one piece but as I prepared dinner I could not avoid its siren call. I opened the red box, took one of the individually wrapped cookies and bit into it.
Normally a fan of dark chocolate, I was surprised at how much I loved the milk chocolate coating. And because they are each individually wrapped, the fortune cookie inside stays crispy and utterly tasty.
It was while eating the delectable cookie that it occurred to me to read the back of the box and see where they were made.
Fife, Washington. So now, not only does Fife produces some of the best red raspberries in the country (sold at Dean & Deluca and Zabar's in NYC) but an independently owned company in Fife is making these wonderful treats.
They sell for $4.99 at the company's website, Metropolitan Markets in the Puget Sound area and according to Mr. C--who quickly devoured three of the six cookies in the box--they are also sold at Bartell Drugs.
So buy a few boxes for loved ones, serve them in a bowl with dessert and Port at your next dinner party or share a box with a friend, neighbor or co-worker. But whatever you do, stash a few away. They are quite addictive.

Even though we have year long farmers markets in the Seattle area, most of the Puget Sound area neighborhood farmers markets closed for the season late last year. However, there is still chance to shop the U-District and West Seattle Farmers Markets. These two markets will close February 25 and 26th respectively.
I took a drive to West Seattle last Sunday and found lovely organic eggs from Stoney Plains Organic Farm, gorgeous beets, crisp and sweet Gala and Fuji apples and Rockridge Farms apple cider (they also had a beautiful Berry Hard Cider in sec and demi-sec styles).
Even though these two markets are a fraction of the size we have become used to in our area and enjoyed from early spring to late fall, there is still plenty of local, seasonal. fresh, organic produce to be had. Not to mention sustainable tuna and fish jerky, organic jams, bread, eggs, meat, etc.
With the gorgeous weather we've been having why not stop by any of these two markets and say hi to these friendly and hard working farmers and take home a few goodies? I can't think of a better way to start a Saturday or Sunday morning.
University District Farmers Market: 10 am to 12:30 pm every Saturday through through Feb. 25, 2006 (the market will then close and re-open in May 2006).
